Whoa, a great new review on our book, How to Negotiate Your First Job, from someone whos been in the job world for a long time. (BTW, CyberMonday is a good day to go to smile.amazon and have them donate a portion of the proceeds to your favorite charity.): I recently purchased this book to help improve my ability to negotiate for myself. In the past I have walked away from salary disputes feeling under appreciated and discouraged. I am greater than 10 years into my career, but figured Id give this book a shot since it had such good reviews. I also did some background research on the authors, Paul and Farzana, and realized they are ridiculously accomplished! Reading this helped me develop a strategy for my recent contract negotiation. Having a plan of attack really helped me calmly go through the process without it feeling like a dispute, as I had mentioned earlier. So much of the negotiation process is a psychological game between employee and employer, gaining a better understanding of that component helped me keep my cool under the pressure. The section of the book about trading on differences was also very helpful to me, realizing that if the salary I was requesting was not met I could still improve my position thru a better benefit package and a more flexible schedule. To summarize, I would highly recommend this book to anyone negotiating a job. It is a must read for new graduates, and extremely helpful for hard working, pro-active individuals, looking to better their current work situation. It was a quick read of very welcomed information, citing several real world examples, as well as the thought process of the person on the other side of the negotiation table.
