Whoa.... my white friends on here, mad disappointing and heartbreaking to see some of the (what I can only term as ignorant) remarks and statuses on the Ferguson verdict. Cant believe so many of you are so out of touch with the realities of urban life. Ive tried to keep this kind of stuff off of Facebook, but yall really bummed me out- and I need to get it off my chest. As I think most of these comments are ignorant, as in the definition of ignorant: lacking knowledge or awareness in general. So excuse the essay, but I needed to post: Government data shows overall drug usage rates are similar among all racial and ethnic groups. Even while crack has been labelled a black drug, 2/3 of crack users in the US are either white or Hispanic. Yet, according to the US Sentencing Commission, 80% of defendants charged with possession or dealing where black. 5 grams of crack (two sugar packets) will get you five years in prison. It would take 500 grams of cocaine to earn you five years in prison. (Crack is a black drug, where as cocaine is a white drug) In the federal prison systems, 57% of prisoners are in for drug charges, most of them for possession. A California study showed: 44% of white population smoked marijuana 38% of black population smoked marijuana 27% of latino population smoked marijuana Yet in every single district studied, blacks were incarcerated 6 to 7 to 12 times the number of their white, and latino counter parts. --- Stats from And Justice For Some...- by Glenn Greenwald ____________________________________ I used to steal from stores as a teen. I thought it was cool. I used to try to be tough. I wasnt, I was trying to be cool cos I wanted to be hip-hop. While I deserved to get arrested, I did not deserve to get shot. Neither did Brown. Every one of you white folks posting Just follow the law has a white friend whos been pulled over driving drunk, and has been let off. Black folks dont have those stories. Think on that. These are why riots happen-- because people try to make their voices heard through peaceful means and are ignored. Its a natural reaction. I personally believe in non violence, but I fully understand why it doesnt always go down that way. Dont take the rioting out of context. Its not just about Brown- its about the millions of others like him- who got a raw deal. Everyday a bucket goes to the well. One day the bottom will drop out.- Bob Marley For those of you posting Just follow the law- dont know the realities of urban life. The system is broken and rigged to oppress black folks in America. They know they are being targeted by the laws of this land. They are sick of it. Until laws change to increase justice, well see more of this. Praying for peace. In the meanwhile, white friends-- please stop posting ignorant nonsense you have no clue about.- Thanks.
