Wholefood Diet Prevents Chronic Disease There is lots of evidence to show that eating plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains protect our health. Now research conducted by the University of Adelaide has examined the link between diet and 11 chronic diseases, including anaemia, hypertension (high blood pressure), hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, hepatitis, coronary heart disease, asthma, stroke, fracture and cancer. Unsurprisingly, it found that people who eat a higher amount of fruit are less likely to develop any chronic disease, while a high intake of vegetables helps prevent people with one chronic disease from developing a second. Healthier participants eat a variety of grains rather than just wheat and rice, which are more likely to be refined, and ate an average of 57 grams of fruit per day – not a huge amount. A higher daily intake of iron, magnesium, phosphorous, vitamin C, potassium and vitamin B1 was associated with healthier participants. All these nutrients can be found in a diet rich in wholegrains, legumes, fruit and vegetables. The study, published in the Clinical Nutrition journal, is the to link poor nutrition to the development of multiple chronic diseases.
