Whoo-hoo! Released from hospital yesterday after 4 surreal nights on the Acute Medical Ward at Durham University Hospital where I received brilliant compassionate care from all the staff who included Lithuanian, Chinese and South African nurses, Indian & Pakistani doctors. I feel privileged to have had such an unexpected insight into the day to day workings of our brilliant NHS and to have seen/observed the enormous pressure our dedicated staff have to work under with fewer and fewer resources but no less commitment to patient care. I was also able to have conversations with women carers and learn about their worries for their loved ones. Many of the women on my ward were looking after frail relatives so their sojourn in hospital brings extra problems. We must address the issue of how we recognise and value the army of carers in our society and find ways to enable them to improve their lives as well as those they look after.
