Whos the real leader here? Congressman Braley or Governor Branstad? The reaction of our political figures to criticism speaks volumes about their leadership skills. The two controversies associated with Congressman Braley and Governor Branstad provide a vivid picture of their very different leadership skills. I’m guessing we all have made a foot in mouth statement that could be interpreted in a way that doesn’t accurately reflect our beliefs. Congressman Braley when confronted with his mis-statement he demonstrated an immediate man-up response to his awkward comments. He immediately apologized to Senator Grassley within 3 hours of his comment becoming public. He further made a public face to face apology to Senator Grassley as well. That should be a model for all of us when we make a foolish statement. Contrast that to Governor Branstad’s reaction to the multiple scandals infecting his administration. He claims he doesn’t know anything about any of the secret payments, political retribution or the toxic culture reported by state employees. He refused to answer any questions for days and then didn’t offer an apology to the fired employees that were forced to go through this torture. He blamed his subordinates for ignoring the prescribed appeal process and made excuses for them not understanding the law. Which approach demonstrates leadership to you?
