Why All The Talk About Vitamin D? In the past few years, scientist and researches have been having a heyday with studies that continue to uncover health issues linked to vitamin D, or rather lack thereof. A notable relationship sweeping the nation is one amongst vitamin D and the ability to fight breast cancer. A recent study by Cedric F. Garland, DrPH of the University of California San Diego, found that “breast cancer patients with high levels of vitamin D in their blood are twice as likely to survive the disease as women with low levels of this nutrient.” Such study was extensive, following 4,443 breast cancer patients over 9 years. Researchers found further proof solidifying just how efficiently vitamin D metabolites are able to increase communication between cells by switching on a protein that actually blocks aggressive cell division. The results among patients with high and low volumes of vitamin D were so relatively consistent that Garland states that he sees no reason to wait for more studies to incorporate vitamin D into “standard care regimens” of breast cancer patients. In addition to its cancer fighting capability, vitamin D has also been strongly linked to a panoply of health defects; because receptors for the vitamin are found throughout a variety of cells and tissues, the ties between vitamin D and our many physiological functions are nearly endless. Just in the past year, there have been several studies published documenting such relationships – from heart disease to immune function, Multiple Sclerosis to Alzheimers, general cognitive decline to SAD, and of course – bone health, vitamin D is their common denominator.
