Why Attend College? Getting ready for the next generation of work requires an education that helps people use today’s technologies now and adapt to new technologies in the future. Although a four-year college degree is not required for many evolving jobs, some education after high school is needed for most jobs in high growth fields. Obtaining a postsecondary degree offers more job opportunities, increased job security and greater potential for financial gain, according to the Kentucky Occupational Outlook to 2018. Two-thirds of all jobs in the future will require at least some postsecondary education, according to a study by The Georgetown Center of Education, and those jobs that require education after high school are the ones that provide the higher wages and benefits that people seek. The more education people have, the more money they can earn, according to the Kentucky Outlook. The average is $23,000 in annual wages for jobs requiring short term on-the-job training to about $33,000 for jobs requiring postsecondary vocational training to over $51,000 for jobs requiring an associate degree. Starting wages will be less than the average but persistence in the field can pay off.
