Why Baptize ? (Matthew 29:18-20) Answer: Only one answer needs to be given! Jesus commanded it! Scripture Focus: KJV And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and , lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Scripture Focus: NIV Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Biblical Observations: The Gospel of Matthew records the resurrection of Jesus and the underhandedness of the chief priest and elders trying to bribe the soldiers into saying that Jesus hadnt risen from the dead but that the disciples came and stole him away while they slept. They even went as far saying that they would secure their position with the governor. So the soldiers received the money and did likewise. And believe it or not this is still reported among the Jews until this very day. Matthew 28:11-15. After this eleven disciples went to Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. When they met Jesus they worshipped Him: some doubted. Vs 16-17. Our Text Understood: Just prior to Jesus ascension back to the Father in Heaven we have recorded by Matthew what Jesus last words to us were. As we behold the truth, we are as obligated today as the Disciples were that glorious day. Hear the voice of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1) Jesus is All Powerful: Jesus gives witness to the power that is given Him, not only in heaven but in earth as well. Therefore with this power Jesus extends the command to His gathered worshipers to a task fulfilling His passion. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Jesus passion my friends is that none of you go to hell but will be saved by the sacrificial death of Jesus himself. Jesus overcame the grave, sin and death. Even as we share this truth today: Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. (2) Jesus said Go: The Lord God spoke to Moses saying go! Exodus 33:1 And the Lord said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it: Likewise: Jesus tells us to go and He will show the way. Where; isnt the focus here, it is on our willingness to be obedient to Jesus. With the power Jesus has and the command for us to Go we have need to ask ourselves one question. Will we be obedient to the command. (3) Jesus said teach: What the Lord has willfully imparted to us by His word we are to share with the world. Where is your go? It is in your own back yard, your community, your county, your city, your state, your nation, your job place, your school, your hobby activity sitting. Wherever you find yourself, your are to model, teach and share the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You dont have to be a preacher, you dont have to be a Sunday School teacher, you dont have to be a Deacon. Jesus has empowered you too my friend, to teach. He didnt ask you to do it alone! In fact; He told us that He will be with us to the very end of the world. How long you ask? Simple! As long as you are alive here on earth! Testimony: I was in a home and the family shared with me the bible that had been given to a young girl of 7 or 8 years of age. As I casually turned the pages of that Bible I saw something that thrilled my heart. Recorded in the front pages were these words: My mom taught me about God. This young lady is here with us today and will experience baptism. A true testimonial of obedience from mom and daughter. (4) Jesus said to baptize: My friend this is an awesome time in the life of a believer. To follow in believers baptism is following our Lord Jesus example. When Paul and Silas witnessed by modeling and then teaching about faith the Jailer followed in believers baptism. Acts 16:27-33 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said. Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And They spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes: and was baptized, he and all his straightway. When Phillip became aware the Ethiopian Eunuch needed understanding, he taught the Eunuch. Acts 8:34-38 And the Eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized: And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And He commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip, and the eunuch: and he baptized him. Conclusion: We can conclude that we are to believe like the jailer and the eunuch. We are to go, teach and be baptized. Take note that their baptism wasnt put off. As soon as possible they were baptized. Likewise, we should do the same. Simply Put: Baptism is a clear command of Jesus Christ. We obey when we baptize and we disobey when we dont. Therefore be obedient! Invitation: For those that havent yet believed and desire to know Jesus. For those that believe and have been baptized and desire to be counted among this flock of Baptized believers and last but not least those that desire to be obedient to the command of Jesus and follow in Believers Baptism. come and join us for our worship service tomorrow.
