Of the 143 million orphans worldwide, more live in Ethiopia than any other country in the world. Just twice the size of Texas, it is home to five million orphaned children. According to UNICEF an Ethiopian child is 30 times more likely to die before the age of 5 than a western child and the majority Of deaths are preventable. Some of the deaths occur from illnesses like measles, malaria or tetanus. Others result indirectly from marginalization, conflict and HIV/AIDS. Malnutrition and the lack of safe water and sanitation contribute to half of all these children’s deaths. The UN estimates that in less than five years there will be more than 50 million orphans in just 16 of Africas 53 countries. What do these statistics show? That while adoption is an important part of the solution it is not the whole solution. We have to support organizations that are helping empower the people of Ethiopia.
