Why Girls Not Brides-Malawi Chapter exists? In Malawi, 50% of girls marry before the age of 18; 9% are married by the time they reach the age of 15 years and 20% of girls who should be in school, are not. Bad cultural beliefs and practices, poverty and legislation that condone child marriages are among the factors that promote this problem. In an effort to respond to this crisis, an emergency meeting was convened at Girls Empowerment Network (GENET-Malawi) offices in Blantyre on 22nd February, 2013 where it was agreed to establish a local chapter of the Girls Not Brides (GNB) in order to enhance collaboration, sharing of information and best practices on ending child marriage. The following are the founding members of Girls Not Brides-Malawi Chapter: EveryChild Malawi, Girls Empowerment Network-GENET, White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood (WRASM), Foundation for Child Rights (FCR), Church and Society Programme (Synod of Livingstonia), Plan Malawi, YONECO, AGANET, Centre for Social Concern and Development, Centre for Girls Interaction and Young Christians Women Association. Vision Statement: A Malawi where all girls are not brides; they marry when they are physically and emotionally mature; after completing full course of their education. Mission Statement: To facilitate active information and good practice exchange as well as collaboration on issues of child marriage through advocacy for technically sound policies and meaningful action in Malawi.
