Why Governor Shema is succeeding Category: Letters to the editor Published on Sunday, 08 December 2013 05:00 Written by Gambo Rimi Hits: 436 Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema is mindful of the fact that government as a great institution is a continuous process, and that is probably why, when he assumed duty as governor, he equally paid attention to a number of uncompleted projects left by his predecessors since the state was created in 1987. His administration rose to complete projects or programmes he inherited, largely based on their merit and the impact they may have on the lives of all the people of the state as well as initiate new others, all for the good of the state. Governor Shema is not the type that always blows his trumpet as is now the case with many state governors in Nigeria as he allows his people to speak for him. Shema hardly talks, but all the projects and the good things he has been doing are being heard. When he took over in 2007 he completed the state university named after its founder and former President Umaru Musa Yar’adua. In addition to completing the institution, he equally initiated other projects and introduced seven more different courses to raise the university’s standard. Since its inception in 2007 the administration is always ready to collaborate with international development agencies such as World Bank and other development partners to further build the state. The state, for example, embraced a World Bank-assisted programme known as Local Economic Empowerment Project (LEEP) designed to improve the economic status of the rural dwellers. The project was tested for five years. Because of the impact the project had made in the state for the first five years of its implementation, the state government, in collaboration with the World Bank, decided to enlarge its scope and make it to be known as Community and Social Development Project (CSDP). The project is expected to wind up by this year’s end, but the state government now decided to continue with it because of its relevance to the state. Just last month, a board for the organisation was inaugurated under the chairmanship of Alhaji Nasir Abdul to carry on with the good work. A gigantic project by the administration worthy of note is the new 250-bed orthopaedic hospital. It is a standard hospital comparable to any other with state-of-the-art facilities all over the place. The administration constructed it to reduce the burden by patients from the state of going to Kano or other places for orthopaedic services. Shema is a stickler to quality jobs as he does not compromise quality under any circumstances whenever he awards contracts of any kind. That is why all his projects are of standard. The roads, blocks of classrooms, all other buildings and many other things are of high quality. People could be heard attesting to this fact. The administration has equally made strides in almost all sectors such as education, health, youth development, infrastructure, agriculture and many others. By extension, this has largely helped in making the state a secure place. His administration is ever determined to ensure that peace reigns supreme in all parts of the state. Even his staunch critics attest to this. Shema recognises the social and economic importance of tourism to the society. So the administration renovated the old Katsina College and Gobarau Minaret to attract more tourists and researchers to the state. In addition to other strides he has created employment opportunities, both in the state and federal level, all in a bid to making the state a better place.
