Why I Write I write. Why? To stay connected. To love who I am. To make sense of the world. To discover new and old ideas. To express my truest being. To purge unwanted emotions. I MUST write in order to be whole and complete. There have been periods I havent written that have lasted years, and I know I was lost at those times -- smoking, partying, denying myself anything healthy, always focused on what wasnt possible rather than what was. I functioned in the most basic of ways and I know writing wasnt top priority. I dont regret anything Ive done, but I do know had I been writing like I do now, in a self-reflective and meditative manner, I wouldve probably been much healthier (actually, I know I wouldve been much healthier.). Always learning! When I look back at the times when I felt any and every thing was possible, I was writing all the time. I carried a journal or notebook just about everywhere I traveled. I spent lots of time in Battery Park City on the waterfront writing away when I first moved to New York. I can lovingly remember how glorious and alive and full of hope and potential I felt just being there. At the time, I believed all of egos and societys trappings -- I was young and in the big city where dreams came alive. Yes, all of that was a part of it, but the writing made it so at a core level. Not too long after I arrived, I stopped writing as much and it was sporadic. I focused on work and having a good time which is all good and fine, but I wasnt doing the one thing that continuously allowed the space for discovery and wholeness. Writing is the place I soar and where I feel completion. Therapy, exercise, eating well, talking, music, meditation -- these are all fantastic aids to my well-being, but writing is ALWAYS my most thorough go to. Writing is a form of meditation / prayer. It is my connection to my highest self. Without it, Im just not whole.
