Why I am Supporting Gay Gerlack For Mayor of Martinez What struck me about Gay Gerlack when I first met her many years ago was her boundless energy, her ability to accomplish more in one day than almost anyone I knew, her innate drive to make things better and always be helpful, and her graceful, dignified disposition. These qualities made having her as a campaign competitor in 2010 quite irksome. But they are, in part, why I believe she would make an outstanding Mayor of Martinez. Of course Gay and I have not always seen eye-to-eye on key issues. To wit: the Redevelopment program. She did not support it; I did. (We all know how that worked out.) But despite our occasional differences, I have found that her ability to build bridges, to listen carefully, to reason soundly, to stand firmly when necessary, and to compromise when essential, is precisely what we need in a Mayor. And those good qualities are not all she has to offer. Through our many conversations, I have learned that Gay has a vision for Martinez that, I believe, is rooted in a deep love for her birthplace. She respects our heritage and works tirelessly to preserve it and build on it. As a small business owner and entrepreneur, she welcomes economic development and opportunity; she also understands fiscal responsibility. As a land owner, she values property rights and property management, sustainable development, and the preservation of open space. As a naturalist, she appreciates conservation and good stewardship of our resources. In every way that I know Gay Gerlack, including as a mother and grandmother, I know her to be an intelligent, hard-working, perhaps even driven, woman who dedicates herself to good causes and makes good things happen. We need this kind of leadership from our Mayor, and that is why I am proudly supporting her. Lara DeLaney Martinez City Councilmember
