Why I do what I do: Because A 10 year old who is celebrating his birthday in a group home should be getting Skylanders and Baseball cards, when he has family that has been approved for him to live with and he should be with them; because a 5 year old little girl was taken from her family and put in foster care because of unfounded charges; because a 4 year old is beaten to death by parents after he was removed from their custody and returned but had repeated reports of abuse; because a neighbor of a child tells me that a family is living in a home without power and although it has been reported it continues; because children come to school dirty or hungry and it is reported by teachers and it takes us too long to respond; because our caseworkers are overworked and expected to do the impossible even though they try; because children are the least represented when it comes to court; because we as the citizens of South Carolina owe it to those who cannot take care of themselves to protect them when they are vulnerable. This is not even a glimpse of the 100s of reasons to make changes to the system we currently have in place. I am sad tonight because my little friend today did not have his family around when he hit double digits but thanks to a wonderful Guardian Ad Litem he had Pizza and Birthday cake. Thanks to all those that really care about what matters!
