Why I love New Orleans day 12: People speak to each other. In the check out aisle, in bars, while ridding your bike through a neighborhood, even passerbys. People here acknowledge each other In an open, friendly manner by 1. Looking at you 2. Making a friendly comment such as How ya doin or good morning 3. They smile or nod. This scares the crap out of the tourists who are used to being entirely ignored by their own neighbors who drift through life like unhappy zombies, scowling at everyone and staring at their smartphones. Bit of advice, when a person in New Orleans acknowledges your existence as a fellow soul existing in proximity to them, do not be afraid! They are not being smarmy creepers, they dont want anything from you (well, most of the time...) they are being... Wait for it... I know its been a while but the word is ... Polite! What to do? 1. Look at them. Here is another fellow human acknowledging your existence. 2. Respond in kind with a good, yourself? Or good morning 3. Smile and or nod. Not so hard is it? You will be surprised how much better off everyone would be if we all did this everywhere. Yall wonder why you are so lonely and have to go on OKCupid.
