Why I reject religious morality, particularly of the monotheistic - TopicsExpress

Why I reject religious morality, particularly of the monotheistic desert religions: I accept that which is evidently true and the evidence speaks for its self. Im not convinced that its even possible to have a moral belief system that is based on completely immoral and/or amoral precepts, therefore I must reject out of hand: vicarious redemption (punishing a person for the crimes of another), human sacrifice (specifically the Jesus narrative and Jephthah), original sin (born guilty of the supposed crime of another) and divine command concepts of morality. An explanation may be in order for divine command: Even if an action actually meets the code of conduct set by a society as moral, it is not a moral system because the individual is not making the choice to do right based on harm vs benefit of society and self. To be a moral agent, decisions must be based on what is in the best interests of those involved. Divine command does not consider what is in the best interests of those involved but is simply following orders like a dog not sitting on the couch. In every case Ive personally encountered, most aspects of divine command have absolutely no connection with benefit vs harm and are, therefore, completely amoral to start with. In order to be a moral agent, one must choose to do what is right. To simply follow commands from a perceived authority is to be a trained monkey, which says nothing about morality nor any claimed truth value. Religious morality is not a system, it is not a virtue, it is not a reality; it is entirely a myth. (R)
