Why I vote against Juncker On Tuesday, the European Parliament will vote whether JC Juncker should be the new President of the Commission. His nomination by the Council has been a victory of democracy and also an institutional victory of the parliament. I have defended very strongly his right to be the first to try to find a majority. But I have also always made clear that the nomination is one thing. Whether he would get my vote is a different thing, because this is a political decision more than an institutional one. And I certainly cannot vote for a candidate who is not clear against austerity, who doesnt want to change the economic paradigm, who is not committed to climate protection, who doesnt want to stop TTIP and whose only response to the global refugee crisis is to give more money to Frontex. Certainly, in the hearing we had with him in the Green group, he also brought up good points, notably his opposition to GMOs and fracking and his stance on lobbyism and on digital rights. But these points cannot outweigh the above mentioned problems. In the next 5 years, we need a decisive turn towards a more social Europe, sustainable investment, strong climate targets and a humane migration policy. This is what we Greens will fight for and for which we Greens will of course constructively engage. I wish Mr. Juncker good luck for the next 5 years!
