Why I was arrested by EFCC – Elumelu on July 16, 2013 at 12:26 am in News By Austin Ogwuda …Threatens to sue the commission for character assassination Asaba—FORMER Chairman, House Committee on Power and Steel in the House of Representatives that probed the power sector, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu, weekend, said that since he has been discharged and acquitted by the court over charges levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, he was considering suing the commission to redeem his name. He was discharged and acquitted by an Abuja court last month. He said that since EFCC hounded him, his life has never been the same as he read with dismay, the avalanche of publicity given to the prosecution both locally and internationally especially the social media network. Elumelu who represents Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency, Delta State, said he was merely being punished by some powers because he refused to bend and dance to their tune by diluting the said controversial power sector report. Speaking at a thanksgiving service held at St Michael’s Catholic Church, Onicha-Uku, his home town, to mark his court victory against EFCC, he said: “Power is something that if you don’t have it, there can be no meaningful development. And our task was an opportunity for us to unravel all the atrocities that were committed in the sector. “My colleagues were people who were committed to ensuring that Nigerians were given stable electricity and we wanted Nigerians to know what happened, that money passed hands because one would not understand why the 132/33 KVA sub-station in Asaba, which cost N9.6 billion out of which N8.1 billion was paid to a contractor has never been completed since 2005. “The question is what happened and why was it so. These were the issues I looked at. Asaba falls within my constituency and if I go home, I expect my people to have stable electricity that was the reason why they voted me into office. It was very ridiculous and let me tell you that the Asagba of Asaba at that time led a delegation to the then President, asking that they give us a sub-station for stable light. That was one of the reasons I refused to dilute the report as requested because I am a Deltan. I wanted the people to know the truth. They attempted to bribe us, they made us all manners of offer and we rejected.”
