Why Kashmir and Palestine fail to liberate themselves? By Waseem Ahad In the wake of large turnout in recent elections in Jammu and Kashmir, a statement by Syed Ali Shah Geelani congratulating Palestinians on their “victory in the UN” last month said the struggle of Palestinians was a “lesson for Kashmiris and worthy to imitate.” To determine validity of the comparison, it is important to examine the statement in light of the history of political developments and the nature of the conflict in the two regions. Geelani’s statement entails two things: success of Palestinian movement and failure of Kashmiris, and responsibility of that success or failure. It also highlights the emotional bond that Kashmir and Palestine share on account of religion, and from that germinates a general tendency in Kashmir to compare the two issues. Leaders sometimes deliberately in public speeches relate the two to add appeal to their rhetoric. Masses like words that are emotionally charged and content wise simple, in short, superficiality works because it exonerates a person from thinking.
