Why Tavon Austin would be perfect for the NRL OK so no Jarryd - TopicsExpress

Why Tavon Austin would be perfect for the NRL OK so no Jarryd Hayne in the NRL anymore. As much as we can cry in our cereal about that fact, all is not lost. Let’s look at the flip side of the record. On Tuesday I was watching Monday Night Football (time difference) and I got an insight of what the NRL should be doing recruitment wise. St Louis slot receiver and kick returner (potential Hayne position) Tavon Austin put on a display in the first half. On 3 plays I think he cut back (side stepped) about 13 times. He is quick, he is illusive and looks like he knows how to hit and break a line. At 173cm and 80kg I don’t necessarily see him taking the hitups and packing in the front row (although in today’s game anyone can pack into a scrum). I do see him as a Jarryd Hayne prototype. He would be perfect playing Fullback for the Eels. I can just see Corey Norman hitting the line and passing to Austin as he breaks through for a try. Or returning a kick with his illusive speed and wicked feet bamboozling the Graham’s and Burgess’s with his stepping ability. Position groups that I think would do well in the NRL is kick and punt returner, running back, middle linebackers, and safety. Now the average career in the NFL is 6 years so you wouldn’t necessarily be targeting NFL stars post career, but the college ranks are stacked with potential talent. I could see a Mario Alford from West Virginia or a Jamal Golden from Georgia Tech in the NRL quite easily, especially with expansion on the table. Now Austin is the 8th pick in the 2013 draft and St Louis has a lot invested in him as the potential player to change the way the NFL is played. However, if he does not make it in the NFL I think that Dave Smith would do well to use his discretionary powers to make him an offer. Just my thoughts…
