Why We Do it Wednesday: *Ms. Rivera and her three children - TopicsExpress

Why We Do it Wednesday: *Ms. Rivera and her three children recently moved from Puerto Rico to Jacksonville. The family of four was staying with Ms. Rivera’s sister once they moved to town. Ms. Rivera does not speak English and her children are doing their best to learn the language as well. Ms. Rivera has been working very hard to create a stable home and provide for her children. Julian, Arianna and Nicole each have different mental health diagnoses, but Ms. Rivera does not let that discourage her. She’s made it a point to make sure her children are receiving as much assistance as possible to meet their individual needs. Daniel started working with the family in September 2013. Ms. Rivera agreed to a family plan with her goals being to complete: Active Parenting of Teens in Spanish lessons, behavior modification lessons, a budgeting lesson, and ESOL classes for herself. She also set goals to find housing, counseling for each of the children, speech therapy for Nicole and to find a mentor for Julian and Arianna. She had quite a list of things to do, but she knew that these things would help her children transition into their new lives here in Jacksonville. We’re excited to tell you that Ms. Rivera is making great progress in meeting her goals! The parenting classes are in progress, behavior modification is being addressed through the parenting classes, a budgeting lesson has been completed and the school is giving Nicole speech therapy. Nicole is seeing a psychologist and psychiatrist; Julian will soon start his counseling sessions and Arianna has already started her counseling sessions. With financial assistance from our agency in which we paid the first month’s rent and a deposit for utilities, Ms. Rivera and her children are now living in their own apartment! We are helping Ms. Rivera get furniture for her new apartment through donations and she’s also learning the JTA bus routes. She is planning on attending FSCJ to take English classes soon. The family is adjusting to their new lives and Ms. Rivera attends church and is making friends; her support system is increasing. Recently, Ms. Rivera told us a friend from church is going to teach her how to drive so she will be able to get a drivers license. Ms. Rivera and her children went from living in a very stressful situation to having their own space and learning to become independent. We are so proud of all the progress this family has made and wish them all the best on their new lives here in Jacksonville! *Client names have been changed to protect their identities.
