Why? Why do we live in a perpetual state Of loneliness, of silent conversations, Of incessant posts on social walls Separating millions by internet providers? Why has our anger and happiness Reduced to CAPS and !!!! marks, And our words shrinking to the bare Consonants and empathetic OMGs? Where have the vowels been shunned to? Y r thr more jargons thn b4? Why is the 21st Century dictionary thinner, And far more vapid than its parents? Is it really language if it can only be read? Or is it really me speaking if my voice Has never been heard aloud, despite Its crackling Tenacity and my cracking, blistering wisdom? Have we come to an age where in now-- Our throats are rusty, our eyes are red, Our fingertips are numb, our feet soft, Our ears sensitive and brains disconnected? Have we lost our “social animal” status By minimizing the interaction of the physical, The depth of touch, the ocean of connection- Have we become cyborgs attached to iPads? Tiny, flat, rectangular screens now hold Faces, numbers, money and million voices; Where is that letter my pen-pal sent to me? Where are the swings, the slides, the see-saw? Why don’t we shut our phones and start talking To that friend we only know through Tumblr, And to that school junior who added you on Facebook Just because he looked up to you? - Maitri Harys
