Why Young Workers Are Dying In Their Sleep Young workers in a major Chinese factory city are dying suddenly in their sleep, a devastating trend thought to be linked to dangerous work hours. According to the Epidemiological Study of Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (Sunds), as cited by the Straits Times, at least 1124 cases were reported in Dongguan between January 1990 and August 2013. Of those, 697 were reported between 2004 to 2013. The Sun Yat-sen University study found that most of the victims were between the ages of 21 and 40, with more than 90 per cent of them coming from production line jobs. Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, is popularly as the “factory of the world” due to its enormous construction, chemical, electronics, home appliances, metal, furniture, garment, shoe and toy industries, which attract migrant workers from all over the country. But Zhang Yiri, an associate professor from Guangzhou City Polytechnic, told the Times that the pay that draws them in is often structured in way that could encourage people to work themselves to death. “Many bosses pay very low base salaries to workers. But the payment for overtime work is higher,” Zhang said. “Therefore, many people apply for overtime to earn extra money,” he said.
