Why anyone can become an organ donor... -Process is painless as organ retrieval occurs after patient is pronounced brain dead. -Brain death is irreversible and for all intent & purposes patient is dead. -For organ donors the circulation and oxygenation is maintained after brain death, on a ventilator and medication. -In the US everyone is legally a NON organ donor unless an informed consent has been signed by the patient. -50% kidneys and most other organs r retrieved from deceased donors. -Islamic burial can take place within 24hrs. It takes 30-45 minutes to retrieve organs surgically and transfer them to a container to cool.
