Why are McMansion so bad? These new houses quickly popped up all over the place all look very similar, because most contractors simply flipped the layout 180° or just do a modular swap. In the process, something goes horribly wrong. In the old days, the houses are similar fundamentally. The kitchen most often faces west, where there is morning light coming through the windows as you are having breakfast. In my neighborhood, each house had a view of Mt Baldy. The new house next to me is so ridiculous. The garage is getting the Mt Baldy view, there is a wall that completely blocks the view of Mt Baldy from their living room, and the kitchen will face a wall of trees (cypress) which line the wall just 8 feet away outside of the window. Of course, the 12,000 sq ft house forever blocks my view of Mt Baldy. Really bad feng-shuei.
