Why are so many leaving the church? Researcher Elizabeth Drescher interviewed a lot of people whod left, and found some strong patterns. Evangelicals, she says, leave angry (feeling mis-led about science, etc). Catholics who leave say they feel betrayed (by clergy abuse and its cover-up). And the mainline faithful? They just end up bored. Week after week, they heard, Love your neighbor, and it was nothing new. The reformation currently underway has to address these legitimate complaints, producing communities of intellectual honesty, moral integrity, and, mostly, a faith that will wake us all up.
