Why are we so corrupt? Is this inherent in our culture, our extremely personalized way of interacting? Our Catholic religion? Our lack of precision and our mismanagement of time? Our confused spaces? Our lack of discipline? Our laziness (yes, I witness this everyday)? Our fragmentation into clans and gangs? When I travel, I experience the lifestyles of countries around the world who were much underdeveloped before us fifty years ago: South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia, Vietnam... Dubai was a village in the 50s. This century, it will host the biggest expo event in 2020 after it builds its next world class airport, the biggest in the world, the Al Makdoum between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. (The zeitgeist here is: we should be No. 1) Yet when Filipinos leave home and work abroad, they excel above the rest. I am certain that when I pass through immigration, there will be whispers: Kabayan, meron ba tayo dyan? (Friend, you have something for me?) It should be culture.
