Why are we there? I forget. Afghanistan has a very long history - TopicsExpress

Why are we there? I forget. Afghanistan has a very long history of being the cross-roads in east Asia since it provided the most convenient route for getting silk and spices from China to the Mediterranean. I probably missed a few, but there have been at least 26 different outside countries with their fingers in the governing of that country, including Alexander the Great, the Mongols, the Soviet Union, the US (we’re still there), and Great Britain. On this day, 1919, the British decided to give the Afghans their independence, whatever that means to a country that’s had two dozen or more rulers. The last picture shows Amir Abdur Rahman who was the emir during some of those last days. “Emir” meant to the British “guy who pretends to run the country while we really control it and him.”
