Why cant I do what I want to do? I mean I want to do the right thing, but I find myself doing the same stupid behaviors that I hate. Ever ask yourself that question? Why do I keep doing something so destructive? As hard as I try, I keep messing up. Paul said it this way in Romans chapter 7: For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do. Hear that: I PRACTICE. Man, do we ever make a ritual of our bad behaviors! They become so ingrained that we cant stop even when we want to stop. Later Paul puts it this way in Galatians 5: For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. What is Gods solution? Lean on His Spirit. Galatians 5:16 - But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. Like an old man leaning on a walker, we dont take one step in our lives without leaning on the Spirit of God. When we do that - when our source of power is God and not our own self will - then we have the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness . . . Remember it is, after all, the fruit of the Spirit and not the fruit of the trying hard Christian.
