Why did Democrats take such a beating yesterday in Michigan. In part it was because the playing field was tilted. Gerrymandering works to protect those who draw the maps. Republicans drew Michigans election maps in 2011, and it continues to pay off with election results that defy the term representative government: Statewide vote for Congress a virtual tie: Democrats 49.15%, Republicans 47.47% (Dem margin 51,862) Dems got more votes, but Republicans won 9 out of 14 seats. Statewide vote for State Senate a virtual tie: Democrats 49.23%, Republicans 50.67% (GOP margin 43,416) GOP wins 27 of 38 seats (71%). Havent had the strength to calculate state House gerrymander advantage ... I can only stand so much pain at a time.
