Why did I enter Miss Pinup Australia? A wise woman once said - TopicsExpress

Why did I enter Miss Pinup Australia? A wise woman once said to me, “the best place to begin a story is at the beginning.” And it just so happens that my story begins in her store… In 2011, I walked out of my abusive marriage and back into in the vintage store I used to frequent in a previous life long since lost. It’s surprising I even fit through the door with all the baggage I brought! But I did. And once inside Atomic Martini Vintage I was welcomed by one of the most glamorous and genuinely lovely ladies I have ever met, Mz Lisa. And she replaced my baggage with beautiful frocks. And wine. And laughter. And encouragement. And through her I met a whole network of amazing, strong and incredibly well put-together vintage ladies. Including Mz Velvet Crush. I first met her in 2012 at a vintage fair, dressed in her signature velvet and topped off with a white fur hat and muff. She was adorable and so very, very sweet. I had seen her perform in a pinup competition earlier that year and pretty much swore off ever doing something like that. Having come from a relationship where I was made to feel I was never good enough, I had a strong aversion to being judged. When I ran into her again at Atomic Martini and she mentioned Miss Pinup Australia, my chest tightened with fear and anxiety at the thought. I shook my head, “no, no, no, that’s not for me – I am most definitely not that perfect housewife type.” But Velvet’s gentle, “go on, give it a go! It’ll be fun!” said so very earnestly in her ocker accent (and those damn dimples!) combined with Mz Lisa’s persistent prodding convinced me! Besides, I was on a mission to take on any opportunity life threw my way – so I did. And it was so much more than I ever expected… (to be continued)
