Why do I post these disparate, seemingly disconnected Today in History commentaries? Since I was a little boy I have had an abiding curiosity about how our understanding of stuff was achieved, not just knowing that, but how and why? The range of human accomplishments that have changed our lives is nothing less than astounding. For all of our foibles and weaknesses, there is within us a repository of potential to create great good. It is important that each generation understands the context within which those human achievements occurred, the social, political, religious and personal, such as gender, race, and health, sometimes formidable personal barriers. Such understanding begins to make it possible to better appreciate the role each individual potentially has in changing not only their own futures, but of those like themselves today and into the world to come. I believe it can be invaluable, especially to younger readers, to learn the stories of those who often appeared to have been ordinary people, but through mentoring, education and training and perseverance, often in the face of seemingly impossible challenges, reveal remarkable creative genius, leading to world-changing achievements. Intellectual curiosity should be a driving force, especially among younger readers. You need not feel embarrassed about finding something far afield from you daily life fascinating. Whether in science, human caring and sharing, visual arts, environmental stewardship, or music, their stories are worth learning and remembering. Creativity and commitment to compassionate relationships hasnt gone out of style.
