Why do couples take “honeymoon” trips after their wedding? The honeymoon originated from an old-fashioned game of hide-and-seek. After the wedding, it was tradition for the groom to playfully kidnap his bride and hold her hostage until her family called off the search. The couple would hide for 30 days, or the course of one full moon, and drink mead, or sweet honey wine, which was made from fermented honey and water, hence the word “honeymoon.” The groom typically elected his closest friend to distract and mislead the bride’s family so that they wouldn’t find her, which is where the “Best Man” originated.
