Why do moderate Muslims get so upset when their holy book is read literally? Is it as terrifying to them as it is to us when read as is? Why do they keep pushing for alternative interpretations - metaphor, allegory, anything - just to avoid the literal reality of the words in the book that they maintain is the articulation of their divine God?
