Why do people have such a fascination with celebrities? - TopicsExpress

Why do people have such a fascination with celebrities? Anthropologically speaking, I understand the need for heroes and role models but celebrities are neither. I really do not understand why anyone cares what they do or how they live their lives. Is it simply that our lives are so pitiful that we need to live vicariously through the personas of celebrities. I can almost understand the interest in Royalty since it really could affect your life but I am at a complete loss for an explanation of the obsession with movie stars and athletes. Hitler and Charles Manson were famous. Would you use them as role models and assume they have the answers to your problems? Fame does not make you smart, moral or even insightful. I really am lost here. Can anyone explain this to me? Why do you care?
