Why do translators rarely join forces in a cooperation, partnership or other kind of legal person? Many years ago a contact of mine was genuinely amazed to see how translators seemed to prefer working alone, rather than working together in some kind of partnership that (for starters) would solve the backup problem. I love the empowerment talk of some of our colleagues here, to me you are the voice of the new generation of self-confident translators who are not afraid to claim and sell their value, but on the other thand: many companies disregard a one-person business, a loner, precisely because he/she is alone and therefore a risk-factor, providing insufficient guarantee for continuity (illness, pregnancy, change of life/ career etc. etc. etc.). Joining forces in a legal person would make translators less vulnerable to the predators on the market, allow them to negotiate better prices, offer a broader range of services/specialisations. In a partnership, translators could hire a secretary for telephone and email, a marketing/sales person for advertising, negotiating, etc. etc. and translators could do what they like and do best: translate. Why do you think translators seem to be so reluctant to start a company with colleagues?
