Why do we care about confidence in girls? As this very thought-provoking article points out, a growing body of evidence shows just how devastating this lack of confidence can be. Success, it turns out, correlates just as closely with confidence as it does with competence. Another part of the article which will surprise few of us: Girls get praise early on for being perfect, and that predisposes them to avoid taking risks and making mistakes. The good news? With work, confidence can be acquired and the confidence gap can be closed between females and their peers. While a lack of confidence in girls (and women) often manifests in us overthinking, and not attempting something, for fear we will fail, once we stop thinking and *act*, we can make our brains more confidence-prone and more resilient.
