Why do you make art? What made you fall in love with it in the first place? Do you remember when you first said, i am an artist ? i got to the studio early this morning. sitting here. staring. trying to decide if i should put a patch cad red light on this one corner of a painitng that is almost finished..knowing that if i do that the whole painting will change and there is no guarantee that this move wont spin the painting out of control.. exciting! the search to make a meaningful painting. the not knowing! the want to give something back to this world. the existential question of why! why am i here? how is my life lived. the journey. i am surrounded by art books. i remember taking the bus to the newport harbor museum of art ( now OCMA) to see an Edward Munch show. my first years of college. a young artist. and the first time i was to see one of his paintings in person rather than in an art history book.. and i was shocked! shocked that they were so alive and present. i remember my first studio, a garage in north long beach and me setting up a still life to paint. the smell of linseed oil and damar varnish. i thought of Cezanne. a point of connection to this world. all the history in this brushstroke. i am an artist sitting here in my studio all these years later, getting ready to make a move, to get up and carry paintbrush to canvas to make a mark.
