Why do you write? Writers are asked this question time and again. Anais Nin’s answer is profound, “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.” Josh Whedon says, “I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not. I write to explore all the things Im afraid of.” Some responses I’ve heard are blunted, ostensibly desperate, “If I don’t write I’ll go mad” or “Writing is like breathing to me.” My unpoetic reply is, “I write because I find it a much more pleasurable alternative to speaking.” What’s your response?
