Why does God withhold some blessings until His people rise up in the partnership of prayer? He requires that we ask, because it causes us to interact with His heart (Jas. 4:2). God governs the universe in partnership with His people through prayer. The Lord gives His people a dynamic role in determining a measure of the quality of life that we experience, as we respond to Him in prayer, obedience, faith, and meekness. He calls us to pray because He jealously protects His relationship with us. And He does this by not releasing some of His resources until we speak to Him in prayer. One foundational principle of the kingdom is that God releases more blessing IF we ask for it. We have all read James 4:2, “You have not because you ask not.” There are blessings that God has chosen to give, but ONLY as His people ask Him in faith. He wants us to do more than simply think about our needs—we are to ask. Many fret and complain about their needs and even talk to others about them, but they do not actually speak them out to the Lord. It is easy to think of our needs without actually verbalizing them. We can whisper it, we can mutter it, or we can even groan it—these are forms of asking. It is not enough to simply think about our requests. We actually have to ask Him because the “asking” leads to a greater heart-connect with God.
