Why does my heart sink when I see a headline US House approves plan to arm Syrian rebels against ISIS? Is it because it feels like a lesson from our own history that we refuse to learn? Perhaps so. Is it because I know we are avoiding the core issues which create an environment for a group like ISIS to grow? Yes. (From where I sit, those issues include a basic floor of rage in the young about feeling so unable to matter--which is partly why so many would join a radical movement.)
