Why don’t I display my Puerto Rican heritage proudly? 1. Because I had no choice in the matter and It is merely a stage in my bloodline. 2. As a muslim my people are those who are closest to practicing Islam as was taught to us by our prophet (s) 3. When I single out a group of people as those I “Proudly” relate to (via nationality and not Faith) then I am inadvertently ostracizing others and highly likely pushing them to group themselves based upon nationality as well. I would in essence be contributing to dividing muslims up into cultural groups. (Which by the way was a tactic used by the British to pit Arabs against Turks in order to topple the Ottoman empire of which ultimately lead to the mess the Palestinians are forced to endure today) 4. Many of the cultural practices of the people I am “from” are in staunch opposition to the way of the people I am “with” (those who guard closely their practice of Islam to be in accordance to what the prophet and his companions were upon – they are the salaf and those who follow their way are the Salafis. These are truly my people in reality, by definition). 5. In keeping with the Sunnah the prophet Mohammads (s) call was to all of mankind which differed from the previous prophets who’s call was to a SPECIFIC people (Nation/nationality). 6. My objective is not to be “PROUD” of anything as even a mustard seed of pride will prohibited my entrance into paradise (May Allah forbid). My aim is to be humbled in gratitude to Allah for guiding me to his path. For this reason you will not see me PROUDLY displaying my Puerto Rican Heritage via flags or the like. I display my gratitude of Islam via a beard and pants above my ankles and portraying a look unique to my people (INSHAALLAH).
