Why don’t I enjoy film? I think I’ve worked it out. With a book, one reads alone; one can read it out of order; one can sneak to the end early; one can put it away or put it aside; one imagines characters. With a film, we’re in another person’s world. To get the benefit, we’re meant to stick it out. We’re trapped. I hate being trapped more than I like being entertained. Anyone else feel this way?
