Why has Irish failed so much? I know there are almost 90.000 native speakers (mostly in rural areas) and 1 million L2 speakers in the Republic of Ireland alone, and the number is increasing (very slowly), but after the foundation of the Republic in the 1920s there were still 250.000 native speakers and it was a widespread vernacular language. Speakers represent 3% of the population, and UNESCO classifies it as definitely endangered. Critics blame the successive Irish governments and their lack of an effective program to improve education and usage of the language.
