Why is America, a heterogeneous nation of many faiths, races, - TopicsExpress

Why is America, a heterogeneous nation of many faiths, races, careers, educational levels, political beliefs, and talents reduced to caustic soundbites reflecting a stark dualism by both extremist conservatives and extremist liberals? It seems on first glance it is simply competition between Fox and MSNBC, but the reality is much more insidious and damaging: the reductionism of a two party system to maintain the status quo, and prevent any other political party in a presidential election from ever winning the presidential prize. Initially, states used predominately proportional representation of electors to the presidency but now 48 states use the winner take all rule, promoted by both Republicans and Democrats. This effectively and mathematically eliminates a third party from ever having a chance at presidency. The upshot of this is a gravitation of both parties to the extreme in their rhetoric and opposition to each other, since there can never be a serious third or fourth party due to lack of proportional representation. The invectives hurled by each side become more strident and ironically, reinforcing since there is no middle way to bring some semblance of logic and reason (and compromise) to the age of with or against mentality. The politics and political process become skewed to the point the public, largely composed of reasonable moderates, become disenchanted with both parties and eschew their duty and responsibility to vote. The election is therefore won by those candidates that can muster enough fringe voters to supplant the apathy of the majority of voters, that exists precisely because of the tactics of the candidates and the inability to compromise once they are elected. It is a sad state for the country to be ruled by extremists, where ideology replaces progress, and reason is replaced by political posturing to the left and right. Shame on you Republican and Democratic parties for reducing our great nation to an endless war between two zealot factions that do not represent the sentiment nor the hearts of our proudly diverse populace.
