Why is it illegal to kill a human but only unethical or frowned - TopicsExpress

Why is it illegal to kill a human but only unethical or frowned upon to kill an animal? I mean, you can hit a cat in a car, running it over and ending its life and you wont receive as much as a slap on the wrist but if you hit a human and injure them, you lose your licence. Not to mention a fine or possible jail time. To me, it just doesnt add up. A life is a life, either way. I just dont see why the lives of other creatures arent seen in the same esteem as that of a human. I get that animals cant defend themselves but is that any excuse? Because they dont speak our language they arent covered by the same law?
