Why isnt my kid playing? This is a good article. As a youth coach, my mandate was somewhat different than that of my years coaching high school. But still the question remained. How I answered was different. As a Pop Warner coach, I took a slightly different approach to less talented players than some of my peers. I challenged my assistants to make our bottom 5 kids better ball players than our opponents bottom 5. This meant additional, dedicated time for skill work for those kids with one or two coaches. Each may only be able to do one thing. But they were going to be able to do to the best of their ability. They would be dependable. And by the end of the season, confident. And I was not afraid to put them in the game. I knew what they could give me. And thats what I demanded of them. This is another avenue where having a dedicated group of assistants was essential. Parents of those kids saw how we handled them and seemed ok with it and their amount of playing time. I was fond of saying I would take my bottom 5 kids to war against any opponents bottom 5. Because we as a staff had done our due diligence to prepare them. There were many games where the time would come and our opponent would have to rotate in their weaker kids for mandatory play count. We would find them and attack them. Whether on offense or defense. It was not my fault their coach failed to prepare them to play as well as they could. So Saturday mornings it was parents on the other team asking why isnt my kid playing? And my kids providing the reason why.
