Why it was essential for SA football to appoint a local national - TopicsExpress

Why it was essential for SA football to appoint a local national team coach! The newly completed requirements for a national coach are more than what we are prepared to consider. To start with, it is well accepted by football experts that at the top of international competitions over 60% of performances are produced by the ATTRIBUTES (talent) of players and less than 40% by relevant coaching and supporting environment. Incorrectly, many football officials believe that success in international football is determined by the quality of ‘general coaching’ expertise. The recent Dennis Mumble’ statement that the coach to take the National Team in the right direction must have “international experience, the right temperament, tactical ability, use of modern science and technology, local knowledge(?), the ability to continue learning and excellent man management” is significantly incomplete. The most DECISIVE aspect in the responsibilities of a national coach is to KNOW, RESPECT AND APPLY the very important attributes (natural traits) and developed playing capabilities of his players in the WAY the National Team plays (philosophy, style, system). THIS IS A HIGH PERFORMANCE PRE-CONDITION AS OVER 60% OF TEAM PERFORMANCE IS BASED ON PLAYERS’ POTENTIAL STRENGTHS (ALL successful examples in the football world prove this fact) Unfortunately, this vital aspect is less studied and considered, especially in countries where football science is not yet developed. For a national team to fully benefit from its players’ natural high performance potential (strengths) it is IMPERATIVE to establish a SYSTEM for talent discovery, talent activation (Some inborn football abilities MUST be addressed before the age of 4 years – see our proposal and the English FA’s new initiative) and FULL CYCLE development. The process of producing EXCEPTIONAL TALENTED PLAYERS for HIGH PERFORMANCE DIFFERS from the conventional youth development concepts (Robin Petersen, be aware of this). First, the predominant characteristics of local (SA) pool of talent MUST be recognized. On the mental criteria there are 3 types (creative, creative-constructive and analytical/decision); on the technical aspect there are 2 types (capable for superior/complete technique and (2) with the ability to improvise); tactically, 3 types are identified (mobile/multi-role, instinctive and disguise/unpredictable); physical side (somatic) we have 2 predominant types (low height, body frame, center of weight and average type). Several other important components related to the special relation between talent and the ball have also been identified and are supported by the latest scientific findings on the effects of ball work on the brain (see Japanese research on Neymar’s ‘football brain’). Second, to ‘unlock’ the natural potential of a player is similar to the case of a lock and a key. The only way to open a lock is with a precisely correct key. In our case the ‘KEY’ must be precisely relevant TRAINING that MATCHES the ‘LOCK’ (A player’s attributes/strengths). If a wrong ‘KEY’ (training) is used the HP potential remains ‘locked’. TRAINING MUST PRIORITISE SA PLAYERS ATTRIBUTES!! (More on this subject at our coaching courses) The NATIONAL COACH – as well as ALL SA coaches – should be aware of this absolute condition in maximizing SA players’ performance potential. That’s why it was so IMPORTANT to have a local coach in charge of the National Team.
