Why, oh why do people try to support charities which are neither local nor oficial? Yet another online charity site has had to be closed down because of irregularities (like a quarter of a million pounds going missing!). It is very difficult, nowadays, to know which charitable bodies are genuine and which are crooked. No matter how deserving a cause may sound, it is necessary for a little discernment when you donate to a charity. NEVER donate to a national charity unless you are happy to pay the obscene salaries and expenses of the "names" on the board of directors. NEVER donate to a charity unless you know that it is actually doing the work it claims to be doing. NEVER forsake a LOCAL charity, whose works and personel you can inspect and talk to at any time. LOCAL charities are far more important than any national charity because they are answerable to the local population and are usually run at the expense of the people who work in them.
