Why should members of the widowed community be referred to as heroes? Because they are indeed heroes. They will not necessarily accept the word “hero” graciously, instead believing the word “hero” to be self-serving or arrogant when used about them, They will use different words. They will brush the term aside. They will self-deprecate; seeing nothing special or extraordinary in the person who is looking back at them in the mirror. Nevertheless – heroes they are. The widowed are handed a set of horrific circumstances that no one deserves. Their families are torn apart; first by death and then often by discord that can eventually leave the widowed to fend alone. Many endure financial and emotional hardships that those outside the widowed community cannot and would not wish to fathom. With little time to pay to their grief, the widowed are expected to carry on every single day with heads held high, even though their hearts are broken and silently weeping. They return to work, raise children and run households, even though they are not sure how they themselves are going to go on. Many do not have the support system that they both need and deserve. And yet they persevere. The widowed persevere with a steely resolve and determination that not all understand or appreciate. They seek support and education because they realize that they are entitled to better than what life has handed to them. Filled with hope, they courageously face their respective todays while praying for brighter tomorrows and are willing to do what it takes to fulfill those prayers. Being willing to do what it takes. This is the very definition of “hero”… … and the widowed community boasts heroes in abundance.
